thickness option under PROPERTIE

Why do I need the thickness option under PROPERTIE? I chose section from SECTION module where the chosen section has its own dimensions including thickness.

[Section] is for defining the properties of 1D element such as a beam, and [Thickness] is for defining the properties of 2D element such as a plate.
